What was I thinking?

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Exhibit C

Exhibit D

Back in January I got a call from Sonja. Against my better judgement I answered my phone. Within 5 minutes she had me convinced that I should sign up for the Rock and Roll half marathon. I hate running. Hate it. 4 miles was the longest I had ever run. 2.5 is standard.
--
Of course I delayed and found the shortest training program possible...8 weeks and halfway through injured myself. I went to the doctor. He was useless. As was everyone else who told me to just give it a rest. Finally after talking to a friend who had just completed the Boston Marathon in 3 hours (WTF?!) I decided that his advice was correct. I gave it a rest. Sheesh, why couldn't people tell me that before I had to pay my $15 copay?
--
After one week off and lots of agonizing about how I was doomed to fail because I wasn't doing anything I went for one of my first long runs. 11 miles. It was horrible. I had my phone wrapped in saran wrap thanks to the dismal weather we've been having, Rudder had to pee and poop every 500 yards and I was running. Duh! Running is freaking boring. I really, really, really need some new music. I need 2.5 hours of Eye of the Tiger caliber motivational music. I did reward myself with Katy Perry's new song right before I went running but couldn't figure out how to move it onto a playlist. So, not only am a terrible runner but I'm also a total apple spaz. I thought these products were supposed to be easy. Am I turning into my mother??
--
Back to the running. I try to plan as much as possible to run alone, meaning without 100lbs of stroller and a toddler who feels the need to hear me gasp out answers to thousands of questions fired off rapidly and reaffirmed 80 times before we move onto the next one.
---
Like I said, I try. To quote Sonja, I have baggage. Unfortunately the City of Renton and Seattle put playgrounds along all of their trails. WHY? Don't they realize that you unequivocally cannot run past a playground with a toddler strapped into a stroller? You have to stop. Have to. If you don't you end up with exhibit A. Exhibit A which has been moved and admitted into evidence is a defiant, I am not moving from this spot toddler. Knowing that this was going to happen I had to tack on an extra half mile onto my run so we could stop at this park. Half of a mile! Remember when I said I don't like running? Well I especially don't like it with all of my added baggage. Exhibit B and C depict said obnoxious, conveniently located-to-trail park.
---
Exhibit D. This is why I encourage immobility. This child was completely content on hanging out in the stroller chewing on my ear buds. Not sure how well they will work after a good saliva dousing but I suppose it's not worse than a little sweat. Right?
---
And my last two pictures? Ah yes, the picturesque brick boardwalk along the river with the cute little ducks. Unfortunately the river is swift and I am nervous. My nervousness= No pushing the stroller for Madeline which = "It's nap time" tantrums. Just in time for my student to walk by. Awesome. "Uh, Hi Bill! Fancy meeting you here! Yeah, we're the spectacle along the river. Okay then, enjoy your lunch!"
--
Lesson learned from all of this? Don't answer the phone when Sonja calls.

Crazy Sleeper

I had to sneak in to take a couple of pictures of how I find this girl every single morning (or every single time I neurotically check on her while she's napping).

Rain or Shine

All these two want to do is go outside and play in the "deckyard."

Ten Months!

My oh my Allie, it's been a tough go these past few weeks. You definitely haven't had the easiest transition from 9 to 10 months. You are getting teeth and when I say teeth I am pretty sure you're growing ALL of your baby teeth right now. Your top middle/right tooth is out, the left one is close behind as are many of the surrounding teeth. You get excited when I whip out the tylenol bottle...it's almost becoming part of your bedtime routine.
----
You're still not a fan of tummy time however you are "crawling" backwards. Nothing I am ready to write in the baby book but to keep you out of jumping school we'll call it progress. You do however LOVE to stand. I am regretting my choice of drawer dishwashers as one of your all time favorite places to stand is at Nonna's dishwasher...along with Obie and Riley and Madeline. There is quite the traffic jam when that door is in the down position.
---
Madeline is still one of the most hilarious people on earth. She can crack some funny jokes let me tell you. The baby babble is one of the most requested. Jumping off of furniture and making Rudder chase things are a close second and third. It all depends on your mood, which if you re-read the first paragraph one might infer is a bit touchy these days. Fortunately you have quite a large sum in the bank with all of your smiles so most people still see you as the laid back, easy going smiler. I have faith, I'll try and drink some extra milk myself so we can get those teeth out and the smiles in.

The little tiny flowers on her pants didn't help

Blue jacket, baseball hat, cords and little uggs does not = little girl.
She's pretty cute as a boy too don't you think?

One Dolla' Please

Kip got this magnifying glass at the hardware store for a dollar. Best dollar he's ever spent. These girls LOVE playing with it. Allie especially thinks peek-a-boo with it is hilarious. Madeline mostly wants to just take it away from Allie.
Kip: Maddie, what's your nose for?
Maddie: For picking!
-------
Background: Allie had really goopy eyes the other day so we took her to the doctor to get her checked out. Turns out she had some sort of infection (not pink eye) so we got her a prescription for amoxicillan.
Maddie: Mama, can I have some medicine too?
Lis: No Maddie, you're not sick.
Maddie: Mama, but I feel like crying.

Peek a Boo!

This little one is working on some top teeth. They are huge. Kip always makes fun of my horse teeth...I fear Allie will be next on the list. They are definitely not the tic-tacs that Maddie has.

Madeline Anne Davis

Kip- Were you carrying Allie in the stroller?
M- Yep
K- And then what happened?
K- She bonked.
--------------------
K-What are your eyes for?
M- For blinking!

Stupid Johnson and Johnson

Tylenol and Motrin have both been recalled. Not normally a huge deal UNLESS you're getting your two top teeth!

Have your cake and eat it too

Maddie : Can I have a piece of cake?

Nonna: I think so.

Maddie: Is my mama going to yell at you?

Nonna: I don't know.

Maddie: Maybe she will just talk.

Nonna: Maybe.

Maddie: Maybe she stay at work and not know!

Holding on for dear life

I managed to rescue the flip video camera for Madeline after realizing how much she loves to watch herself on video. We've been sitting around today inside, avoiding the rain, and watching some of our home movies from a year or so ago. It is amazing to me how fast she is growing up and how much of the stuff that she said and did I've forgotten!

In order to remedy that I vow to be better at recording some of the funny things she says and does because despite what I think at the time, I honestly just don't remember them after a (short) time.

  • I swear sometimes when we try and show Madeline something she spins in circles for what seems like an eternity trying to find it. It's painful. The other day there was a spider dangling from the ceiling that had descended right to Madeline's height. She couldn't see it. Kip blew on it so that hopefully enough movement would be created that she could see it. It worked, thank god. In response she said, "Foooo it mama" This one actually took a few times for me to figure out...she wanted me to blow on it too.

  • This week M has been pretty concerned about alligators in her bedroom. More specifically alligators coming up between the wall and her bed. Fortunately we have a 6' dragon that fits perfectly and is there to keep the alligators at bay.

  • Every time we go to swimming Madeline asks if she is going to get a fish. Every single time. When you do *fantastic* swimming (or it's your birthday) you earn a little plastic fish.

  • When we're driving around Madeline loves to have the radio very loud. Often she'll ask questions so I turn down the volume to answer. I am quickly reprimanded and told to turn it back up. I really need some better speakers. Probably won't be too long...these might blow if we keep the volume at current levels.

  • Madeline does NOT like to say goodbye. Ever. To anyone. She might give you a kiss if you're lucky (or you have something she really wants) but she will immediately wipe her face off. She does give out Eskimo kisses.

  • She has tried to pick Allie up to carry her around a few times this week. Allie does not like to have two arms wrapped around her neck and is quick to use whatever air is left in her trachea to scream.

  • Thomas is still an obsession. She will do anything for anything Thomas. See below post.

  • She loves cut flowers. Every week Nonna buys her some from Pike Place Market. Every week when I throw the old ones out she gets upset with me until I reassure her that we can get more. (Mom, don't feel like you have to buy us flowers!)

  • She loves to boss Rudder around. She also says, "Good boy buddy" exactly like Kip does when he praises Rudder.

  • She does not like to be ditched. I have to reassure her when I go down or upstairs that I am not going to leave her.

  • If she needs to leave mid-meal for a bathroom break she yells out to me the entire time she's gone not to eat her food.

In her own sweet time

it only took a couple of years and a lot of bribes of picking out thomas videos but hey, good work kip! It's a short snippet but this girl answered questions, danced and got two hand stamps at the library yesterday!

Happy Weekend

Madeline is off to the cabin with Zaide and Baba
Our Conversation:
Lis: Are you going to miss me?
Mad: No I am excited. I get to see Zaide and Baba and Had-ey and Megan and Ryan and Rudder be going?
Lis: I don't know if Rudder is going, one can only hope.
